About Mystic Villages

A different way to
experience the Himalayas.

An initiative of the Chalo Chamba programme — community-led tourism that connects visitors with the people, cultures, landscapes and knowledge systems that make mountain life unique.

A different way to

The Himalayas are often celebrated for their mountains, forests, rivers and breathtaking landscapes. Yet the true spirit of the mountains lies not only in their scenery, but also in the communities that have shaped and sustained these landscapes for generations.

Across the Himalayas, many rural communities face growing challenges — from migration and changing livelihoods to the pressures of conventional tourism and environmental change. Mystic Villages was created to help travellers experience this deeper Himalayan reality.

Rather than viewing villages as places to pass through, Mystic Villages invites travellers to slow down, stay longer, and engage meaningfully with local communities — to experience the Himalayas not as spectators, but as participants in the rhythms of everyday life.

We envision tourism as a force that contributes to the wellbeing of both people and place. Every journey should leave communities stronger, cultures more vibrant, and landscapes more resilient.

Why Mystic

A way of
seeing the world.

Mystic speaks of wonder, contemplation, connection, and the recognition that some of life's most meaningful experiences emerge from simplicity, relationships and a deep sense of place.

A Mystic Village is not defined by monuments or attractions. It is defined by a living relationship between people, nature, culture and community — a place where forests are more than scenery, where rivers carry stories, where traditions remain woven into everyday life, and where hospitality is offered not as a service, but as an expression of community.

What makes a Mystic Village

Four ways
of being alive.

01

Living Culture

Culture is not performed for visitors — it is lived. Festivals, cuisine, folk music, crafts, farming practices and community celebrations continue to shape everyday life.

02

Living Landscapes

Mountains, forests, streams, farms, pastures and orchards are not scenic backdrops; they are part of the living fabric of community life.

03

Living Knowledge

Generations of observation, adaptation and stewardship — traditional watermills, natural farming, herbal wellness, local architecture.

04

Living Communities

Women, youth, farmers, artisans, herders and elders design, host and benefit from the tourism experience. You are welcomed into a community, not a product.
